Project management is to utilize effectively various resources (human, finance, materials, information, science and technology and market etc.) during carrying out the activities of a project so as to meet objectives of every parties and persons related to the project. The M.Eng.(PM) programme is to train high-level, comprehensive and application-oriented engineering management professionals specialized in carrying out project management including decision-making, planning, execution and evaluation/review etc. during the life-cycle of projects which may be the engineering projects and relevant service projects in construction, information technology, manufacturing, agriculture and national defense industries. As a means of realizing strategy management, project is an organized, unique and once-off endeavor with definite objectives. Project management is to utilize effectively various resources (human, finance, materials, information, science and technology and market etc.) during carrying out the activities of a project so as to meet objectives of every parties and persons related to the project. Project exists everywhere. The mastery and application of project management theory and method become more and more important in the core competence development of an enterprise. Project manager also become the most attractive professional career for youth in the 21st century. The project management body of knowledge includes mainly integration management, scope management, time management, cost management, quality management, human resource management and communication, risk management and procurement management. Project management, being a general management technique, has been broadly applied in the construction, information technology, manufacturing, agriculture, national defense, energy and environment industries etc., and remarkable efficiency and benefit have been achieved. In coping with the fast economy growth, keen competition and enterprise’s less profitability, it is required to carry out more elaborate planning and control based on project, i.e. project-based enterprise management. Project management has therefore brought revolutionary to enterprise management. Training Goal To train high-level, comprehensive and application-oriented engineering management professionals specialized in carrying out project management including decision-making, planning, execution and evaluation/review etc. during the life-cycle of a project. The M.Eng.(PM) holders are expected to have concrete theory fundamentals and broaden knowledge in the field of project management; understand the trend of project management development domestically and internationally; be able to carry out independently project identification and evaluation, financing, organizing, procurement, project planning, execution and control, risk management, human resource management and communication etc; mater a foreign language and can read literatures as well as speak and write in the foreign language. Field Scope With respect to management objects, the engineering projects and relevant service projects in construction, information technology, manufacturing, agriculture and national defense industries are covered. With respect to work the project management professionals do, the research and application of project management theory and technique, the management and consultancy during every phases of a project life-cycle, and the education and training of project management professionals are covered. With respect to the project management body of knowledge, the integration management, scope management, time management, cost management, quality management, human resource management and communication, risk management and procurement management are covered. These are also the key research areas of project management. With respect to the research hot themes at present, the knowledge management, soft management (human/environment/culture, etc), risk management, programme management, time management and organization management are covered. Courses Fundamental courses: natural dialectics, foreign language, information searching, intellectual property, IT application. Fundamental specialty courses: mathematics (operational research and statistics etc.), management, economics. Specialty core courses: project management, project planning and control, industry-specific PM case studies , industry-specific PM laws and regulations②, applications of IT and/or PM software. Elective courses: four categories of courses in engineering/technology, management, law and economics could be offered in accordance with different circumstances of the industry, university and students concerned, which include: project evaluation, project financing, risk management, project management evaluation, environmental impact appraisal, procurement, accounting and financial management, human resource management and communication, safety management, quality management, project integration management, organizational behavior, economics, enterprise management, strategy management, industrial engineering, economic laws and contracts, system engineering, modeling and simulation, e-commerce, PM professional English, etc. Total course credits should not less than 28. Other essentials: seminars on frontiers, research methods & thesis writing, research proposal and thesis oral defense, etc Thesis Thesis should be originated from practice or has clear engineering background and be of practical usefulness, and should resolve at least one complete project management problem. For research on fundamental PM technique, framework or software development, the thesis should present in details the theory thereunder/gist, application scope, case study and result analysis. For application research, the thesis should present in details the problem, the solution method, conclusions, reasonability analysis and effectiveness. The so-called application research could be the proposal of project planning, financing or organization schemes, the study on project planning and control frameworks or methods, the solution to disputes, or the research on project management mode/framework, technique, method or environment etc.
